• My name is Vanda Capaldi and I am the daughter of the artist, the late Mario Capaldi. I graduated from

the University of Teesside with a MA in Creative Writing.

I wanted to write about my father since his death in 2004. I thought that people might be interested in his early years, growing up in Glasgow as part of the close-knit Scots-Italian community and the difficulties he faced to pursue his career. Friends and colleagues who knew Mario as an adult regarded him as an extremely versatile and talented British artist, who was proud of his mixed heritage.

Mario Capaldi did achieve a successful career for forty-four years working as an artist for children’s books and comics for prominent companies such as IPC Magazines, London and Marvel US. He developed his own projects and painted detailed Victorian scenes and biblical representations, some of which became best-selling Christmas cards for Sharpe’s Classics. He was skilled in; oils, watercolours, acrylics, pencils and inks and could display a variety of styles and subject matter, (which I hope may be the subject of another book).

Almost all of the forty-four poems are organic in that the content has driven the form, although some seem more traditional and I often use rhythm, rhyme and dialogue in my poems. They are designed to be read in chronological order, to recount the story of someone’s life.

I hope that you may be tempted to read it, and if you do, I hope you enjoy it!
